Luke Downes Coventry Sphinx

The first Coventry Sphinx first team squad news of 2024/25 comes in the form of four players who have left the club. Luke Downes, Ashton Demulder and Leo Brown have departed to sign elsewhere for the new season, while Will Edjenguele has taken the decision to retire from football.

We’d like to place on record our heartfelt thanks and very best wishes to Luke, Ashton, Leo and Will, all of whom made vital contributions to our first season in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands in 2023/24.

Will joined during the season and became a defensive mainstay, showing class and leadership throughout his time at the club. Leo initially joined on loan from Alvechurch, scoring crucial goals both during that loan spell and after signing just before the registration deadline to help see us over the line. Both were critical additions and we wish them well for what’s to come.

Ashton came up through our junior section before moving elsewhere to play his first senior football. He came back in during the 2023/24 season and was a regular starter in our first Step Four campaign. We wish him every success at his new club.

Luke leaves the club with genuine legendary status secured. He’s been a fixture in the midfield for years either side of a spell with Coventry United, winning the United Counties League Premier Division South with the Sphinx in 2022/23. Luke and his family were and are a big part of our club, and we’re rooting for him in his new colours next season. Thank you, Luke.
