Sphinx Stay Top.....

Randy Forder

Coventry Sphinx 3 v 1 Stratford Town

Sphinx done what was required against Stratford town in a game that Stratford really needed to win to climb the table.

Startford started strongly with Myckel Beckley making a surging run down the right before unleashing a great shot which Carl O'Neill spectacularly tipped onto the bar.

For the next 10 minutes Startford had the majority of play but had no other meaningful efforts on goal with the Sphinx defence resolute, Reynolds had an effort that was charged down and from the corner Sphinx broke with great effect with Luke Williams released Aaron Donaldson down the right who surged into the box to calmly slot past Morris in the Stratford goal.

A few minutes later Donaldson was involved in Sphinx 2nd goal when his shot hit Williams and deflected into the Stratford goal with Morris beaten.

Stratford piled on the pressure and O'Neill came to Sphinx rescue when he pushed Blake's near post effort onto the post. For all Stratford's efforts in the first half they could not find away past the Sphinx defence.

2nd half was pretty much the same as the first half with Stratford having the majority of the ball but not threatening a Sphinx defence that was lead superbly by Liam Kay and Jamie McAteer and backed up by the ever vocal Carl O'Neill in the Sphinx goal.

O'Neill was called into action in the 78th minute when he pushed another Reynolds effort round the post, with 3 minutes to go Murphy gave Stratford a lifeline when he returned a poor clearance back through a sea of legs to beat O'Neill.

Sphinx were not to be denied though when another quick break out of defence found Edwards with time in the box but was bundled over for a Sphinx penalty that Williams gave Morris no chance with.

Overall a very resolute display by Sphinx who had a game plan and stuck to it and though some might say Stratford deserved something from the game for all there possession but the game is about attacking and defending and if you cant break down a very well organised side you don't get zip at the end of the day the only thing that matters is the score line
