Sphinx make it five on the bounce.....

by Randy Forder

Shifnal Town 0 v 2  Coventry Sphinx

Coventry Sphinx had the use of the Sky Blues’ V.I.P. Coach for their away trip to Shifnal and put in a performance that the Sky Blues are sadly lacking.

Though short of Liam Kay, Terry Ward and the injured Aaron Donaldson Sphinx still had too much in hand for Shifnal. Kyle Rhodes stepped in to fill the centre half berth vacated by Terry Ward and Kelvin Phillips returned to partner Adam Kinder up front in place of Aaron Donaldson.

At a windy and very wet Phoenix Park, Sphinx were soon on the attack with Wilson-King providing a cross which eluded the oncoming Adam Kinder. Manak was next to have a pop at goal with a 30 yard drive which pulled out a good save from the Shifnal ‘keeper. Both Wilson-King and Jimmy Halton were causing problems down the flanks and it was Halton’s tenacity which brought Sphinx their first goal. He evaded 3 tackles and though his cross was lacking slighty it found the danger area and bobbled around until Kinder rifled a left foot shot into the net for his 6th goal in 6 games.

Sphinx were now controlling the game with Manak and Woodward complimenting each other in midfield and McAteer and Rhodes solid in defence.

On 27 minutes Sphinx went two up with Woodward's inswinging corner being nodded in by Phillips for his 10th league goal of the season. Halton was to end the half with a dazzling run down the right before cutting inside and curling a lovely left foot shot just past the’ keeper’s upright.

Shifnal came out in the second half with a little more purpose and shaded the first 15 minutes. O'Neill pulled off a stunning save when he parried a 25 yard shot which was swirling in the wind. Sphinx nearly had a third when Woodward’s corner again found Phillips but his powerful header was cleared off the line bizarrely by Adam Kinder who could not get out of the way of what was  a certain second goal for Phillips.

McSheffery made three quick substitutions with Ruff, Muldoon and Jardim coming on for Wilson-King, Manak and Kinder. Ruff soon made his presence felt when harrying the defender into making a mistake and his ball found Jardim in the box whose shot was well saved. The rebound fell to Phillips who for the second time in the game had a goal bound effort cleared off the line.

All in all it was good solid display from Sphinx and three points that takes them to third in the table and looking good for their target of a top six finish.
