Sphinx squad nearly come out on Topp....

by Kev Monks at Topps Park.

Oadby Town 3 v 2 Coventry Sphinx

Two late goals cost Coventry Sphinx a victory at Oadby Town.

With a number of key players unavailable or nursing injuries, Sphinx boss Danny McSheffrey was forced to name himself amongst the substitutes for this trip to Leicester. There is strength in depth though at Sphinx and this genuine squad performance was almost enough to lure the points back down the M69.

Kelvin Phillips nearly had Sphinx ahead in the opening minute at Topps Park but it was the home side who took the lead in the 20th minute when Stuart Spencer was allowed to turn inside the area and fire a shot into the bottom of the net that just beat the diving Carl O'Neill.

Josh Ruff worked well in midfield and showed a lovely turn of feet to prevent yet another attack from the side coached by former Leicester City defender Matt Elliott.

McSheffrey used his one fit substitute in Jerome Murdock in the 50th minute and seconds after his introduction, Sphinx were level when Murdock played the ball across the area for Kelvin Phillips to fire home.

Phillips, for whom this was almost a home game, added a second four minutes later with a stunning finish that gave home keeper Scott Washington no chance.

Jerome Murdock could have increased the total with fifteen minutes left when he beat his marker to get into a shooting position. Unfortunately for the travelling Sphinx support he fired over.

However, it was not to be Sphinx's night. In the 83rd minute, Oadby drew level when a ball from the left was not cut out and it was knocked in from close range.

Straight after the goal, the home side took the win when Nick Pollard's long looping cross went in at the far post and Sphinx lost their third consecutive league away game.

Thoughts now turn to Saturday and the prosepct of a fourth game alreadt in this season's F.A. Cup
