Men Against Boys.....

by Kev Monks.

Sphinx 1 Gornal 8

Sphinx suffered their biggest ever FA Vase defeat against what is becoming a bogey side for them. Gornal have now smashed 17 goals past Sphinx in two Cup ties and one league game.

Funnily enough Sphinx started the better of the two sides and should of been 2 up within 10 minutes but Galdins and White squandered the chances that might of put a different look on the scoreline and who knows maybe the result.

For the next 80 minutes Gornal were allowed to do what they wanted. They went in at half time 4-0 up after missing a penalty, hitting the post and young debutant Connolly pulling off two very good saves. Connolly in fairness to him answered a emergency call when Sphinx reserve keeper was not available for the match. He performed very well with good handling and distribution and was not at fault for any of the goals.

Second half was very much the same Gornal scoring 4 with a consolation from White for Sphinx. Harry white went off to hospital with an accidental knee in the eye which needed treatment to a cut above the eye.

It was the proverbial men against boys with a Sphinx side with several players under the age of 20 Gornal made there experience tell. But this does not take away from the fact that previously the same squad had played so well for the last 10 games its as though they have come full circle after the 6-0 defeat away at Gornal.

Next Saturday see's a tough league fixture away at Heather where nothing less than avoiding defeat will do. A team doesn't become a bad team over-night the squad are going to have to take the defeat on the chin and learn from their mistakes......quickly.
