Coventry Sphinx 6 v 0 Cradley Town

Coventry Sphinx made light work of bottom side Cradley Town with a 6-0 home victory this afternoon.

Danny McSheffery’s side fielded former Coventry City midfielder Kevin Thornton as part of his bid to get some match fitness and the Irishman played his part in a Sphinx side, who started brightly had the ball in the net in the sixth minute only for Aaron Donaldson’s header to be ruled out for offside.

Thornton was involved in Sphinx’s first goal of the afternoon which came in the 15th minute when he pumped a Donaldson ball into the area. It was only cleared as far as Callum Woodward some twenty yards plus out and his piledriver flew into the net.

Woodward fired over from a Donaldson pull back before Sphinx hit a second in the 25th minute when Donaldson’s cut back following a surging run into the area was met by Adam Kinder who fired home.

Cradley defended well for the next hour and were fuming when a 73rd minute penalty was not awarded. The vistors had lost their way and had Josh Craddock sent off for a second bookable with ten minutes remaining.

Sphinx went for the jugular. Kevin Thornton crowned a good performance when in the 83rd minute he pushed towards the area and hit a twenty yarder which Cunnington could only palm into his own net.

The Sphinx support were still celebrating that goal when Callum Woodward hit a fourth for Danny McSheffrey’s side when he fired home thanks to a lovely run and cross from the byline by Thornton.

With two minutes to go, defender Craig Goodbody collected a free kick resulting from a foul on Tom Hayward and from the edge of the area beat the ‘keeper with a low drive.

Boosted by his first goal for the first team this season, Goodbody got into a similar position, forty five seconds into stoppage time and sent a low drive into the net to send the Sphinx support home happy!
