Sphinx Pav The way To The Top

by Kev Monks

Boldmere St. Michael's  0 v 2  Coventry Sphinx

Coventry Sphinx went to the top of the Midland Alliance League with a 2-0 victory at Boldmere St Michaels.

On a typical autumn afternoon at Church Road, Coventry Sphinx with a slightly changed side to that which had drawn against Gresley on Monday night, got straight into the action.

Two early corners were followed by the Sphinx support feeling that they should have had a penalty with a handall which the referee Mr Johnson did not see.

Luke Williams, who worked hard up front with Pavel Tomczak and was unlucky in the 17th minute with a twenty yarder that just flew just wide of the far post,

Sphinx kept pushing with left back Jackson unleashing a thirty yard piledriver. Only for Joseph Smith to go up the other end and hit the bar.

In the 31st minute, the Sphinx support got the penalty they had called for when Tomczak was pulled down. Luke Williams stepped up and hit it low and hard but Chris Butler dived to his left and brilliantly pushed the ball away for a corner.

Butler took the plaudits from his team mates and the crowd but went from hero to zero when he flapped at the flag kick and the ball came off Terry Ward's head and landed in the back of the net.

Sphinx were forced down to ten men for a while when Adam Bilic went off after suffering blurred vision and this numerical advantage allowed Boldmere to attack with venom. Carl O'Neill made an absolutely brilliant double save when Abonglhour met a cross with a fierce half volley which O'Neill parried up but with it looking as though the ball was drifting into the net his reactions off the ground were immense as he got off the floor to punch the ball away minutes late he then dived to push a shot from Simeon Tulloch, who was Boldmere's best player.

Alan Newman eventually came on to replace Billic. After a member of the Boldmere bench had blocked the path of the referee to the changing rooms at the interval, the second half got underway with Sphinx looking for more goals.

On the hour mark, Pavel Tomczak won a long ball, headed it down and beat a defender before slipping the ball through the keepers legs to put Sphinx two goals up.

Butler made a great save to deny Paul Saunders as Terry Ward and Jamie McAteer mopped up everything in a rock solid defence.

Tomczak fired over late as Sphinx went top thanks to Westfields losing at home to Alvechurch.
