Coventry Sphinx 5 v 4 Bilston
Sphinx got there name in the hat for the second round of the FA Vase draw which takes place this coming Monday but did they ride their luck.
Sphinx started very well and soon sailed into a 2-0 courtesy of 2 well worked goals from Kiam Gladins and Ricky Cutting. But then the wheels started to come off whether that was through complacency only the players could tell you that.
Ricky Cutting Scores Sphinx 2nd From An Acute Angle
Bilstons first goal came from giving away a needless free kick which when delivered into the area Sphinx could not clear and Pugh took full advantage firing the ball high into the Sphinx net. Sphinx replied quickly when Holmes released Fraser down the left and he fired a fierce rising shot that according to the Referee's asst went in off the bar though Bilston players said it never crossed the line.
Bilston came back 3 minutes later again Sphinx failed to clear a long punt which was helped on by Pugh but cleared for a corner, the corner was played into the near post where Griffiths was given a free header to reduce the deficiet.
Halftime came and went and for the rest of the second half it was tit for tat with both teams having chances which were squandered. In the 90th minute Ashley Jackson was adjudged to have handled the ball when to the majority of players it looked as though the ball hit his chest. Up stepped mason who curled a sublime free kick into the top corner leaving Martin grasping air.
So onto extra time and it was Sphinx who started the better of the teams with 2 half chances. Bilston took the lead when yet another long ball into the box was not cleared and Turton turned his man to fire Bilston into the lead and with what looked to be the match winner.
What Sphinx have done to their credit over the last few games is to keep plugging away until the last minute. Hard work and endeavour and a little bit of lady luck was on Sphinx side today as Sphinx looked for the equaliser and it came from one of the smallest players on the pitch.
Steve Barrett Stoops To Equalise in Extra Time For Sphinx
Johal made ground down the right and clipped in a neat little cross which Barret converted with a neatly taken header. Sphinx now had there tails up and were peppering the Bilston area but without worrying the Bilston goal.
On 96 minutes it was Bilston who gave away a needless free kick and Holmes swung the cross in which was met Houchen style by bates the Bilston defender leaving his keeper with no chance.
So Sphinx survived this encounter but will need to be more than 100% throughout the rest of the season otherwise it will be a very long hard season.
