Sphinx make progress.....

by Randy Forder.

Gornal   3 v 1   Coventry Sphinx

Coventry Sphinx showed a great improvement from their last visit to Gornal. Due to unavailability and injury Adam Bilic made his first start of the season, in came Tom Muldoon and Matt Bannister.

Sphinx started the game nervously and were prone to the long ball into the fast front runners of Gornal. After 10 minutes Sphinx started to settle and play some good football with good counter attacking play.

On 11 minutes Sphinx took the lead a good counter attacking move ended with Mulldoon laying the ball back to Saunders who drove into the box and fired into the net. The lead was only going to last 3 minutes. Sphinx gave a way a needless free kick which was played into the box. The Gornal centre half got a flick onto the ball which fell at Sangha's feet he was given far to much time to turn and shoot past martin in the Sphinx goal.

Gornal had a effort well saved by Martin on 20 minutes. Both teams were giving there all with some tough challenge's being thrown in. Danny Fraser blazed high and wide for Sphinx but both teams went in at half time level.

Both teams came out with re-newed vigour though neither team were making real efforts on the keepers goal. Bilic in midfield was outsstanding for Sphinx as was Jimmy Holmes in the centre of defence.

Gornal were to break the deadlock on 66 minutes a badly defended corner was returned back into the box and Bennett was given time and free header to give Gornal the lead.

Sphinx made two quick changes which nearly brought Sphinx and equaliser. Louis Guest, Captain of the Sphinx youth team, replaced Steve Barrett and Ashley Jackson replaced Adam Bilic who had pulled up with cramp.

Guest though a centre half was employed up front and his challange on the centre half caused a bit of confusion, Guest latched onto the loose ball which he drove just past the keepers post.

With Sphinx pushing for the equaliser the last 15 minutes became frenetic. Gornal had a one on one with the keeper which martin smothered well. Cutting drove into the Goranl box and drove against the underside of the bar with no Sphinx player following up. Fraser then made a good run in the box and pulled the ball back for Jackson whose first time goal bound shot hit his own player.

In the 90th minute Gornal put the game to bed when a quick break exposed the Sphinx defence and Bennett was on hand to score his second.

Sphinx: Martin, Johal, Holmes, Long, Fraser, Bannister, Bilic, Saunders, Barrett (S), Cutting, Mulldoon. Subs: O'Toole, Jackson, Guest.

Luke Hopkins went onto say "As my Asst Lynton said we came here a few weeks ago and didn't compete and were lucky not to be on a double figure defeat. Today we take plenty of positives. We played for the full 90 minutes we competed, we showed desire and above played for the shirt. If we keep progressing we will soon be putting a winning run together we are in a sense going through a pre season period as we try and gel a side to compete week in week out in the Alliance"

"We are still looking to bring in 2 or 3 players. Ryan O'Toole has joined from Alvis to bolster the midfield we have Kyle Rhodes, Dion Barrett, Kiam Gladins, Matt Stone, Robbie Stevenson and Iseyden Christie to come back into the squad ready for next weeks FA Vase game at home to Bilston Town"
