Sphinx Slay The Adders
by Randy Forder.
Atherstone 0 Sphinx 3
Sphinx moved upto 3rd place in the league with a 3-0 win away at Atherstone Town.
The pitch was not the best but Sphinx adapted better than there opponents who could only muster one effort on target. Sphinx on the other hand could of had a further 3 goals with a little bit more finesse in front of goal.
Tom Muldoon opened the scoring scoring with a left foot drive after good work by Ash Jackson and Luke Williams. Muldoon could of doubled his scoring on 30 minutes when he failed to hit the target from a Williams cross with his header just going over the upright.
Jackson made a good run down the left and surged into the box but his shot was pushed away by the Atherstone keeper with Muldoon ready to pounce.
Terry Ward nearly converted a cross into his own net when he mis-judged a clearance with the ball clearing O'Neills right hand post with him just a mere spectator.
The second half was pretty much the same as the first half with Sphinx having the majority of possesion and Atherstone huffing and puffing to get back into the game.
Sphinx got there second on 54 minutes when Muldoons corner caused panic in the Atherstone box and Jackson was on hand to bundle the ball over the line.
Kay should of done better when the defence opened up but rather than shooting he played in Williams who done well to get a shot on goal but caused no problems for the Atherstone keeper.
Williams was in the thick of it again when he turned he mark and fired a powerful shot just over.
Oh The Pain....
McSheffrey made three quick changes within a 10 minute period with the returning Josh Ruff replacing Liam Kay, Adam Bilic replacing Alan Newman and Paul Saunders replacing the injured Chris Hayden.
It was the latter of the three who had the ball in the back of the net, Saunders found himself with acres in the box and calmly slotted the ball home but was deemed offside.
In the final 5 minutes Jack Edwards made it 3 when he got on the end of a Jackson cross.
Overall not the best display by any means but its another 3pts and like Asst Manager Lee Knibbs said "When you come to places like this where the surface is not the best its all about attitude and committment to the cause. 3pts away from home is good enough"
